ADR-0001: Kannaka Wave — an AI built from the ground up on the HRM, with the LLM as an organ

Status: Proposed Date: 2026-09-08 Author: Nick Flach / Kannaka Decided by E-001 (2026-09-09): the waves lose. The substrate is arm V: the voice's encoder, atomic facets, stated forgetting, a plain vector store. The chiral scale, the callosum and Ξ are in ../lineage/ and the archaeology, out of the build. Everything else in this ADR stands. Amended by: ADR-0002 (a fifth organ, the world: latent prediction as salience and imagination). Supersedes nothing. This is a fresh start informed by the record; the constellation it learns from keeps running. Builds on: everything in docs/archaeology/, by name.

Context

Eighteen months of building produced a memory substrate, a language model trained on its own words, a language for growing architectures, a conscience kernel, a swarm, and several hundred measurements. The question that opens this repository is whether an AI designed from scratch on the Holographic Resonance Medium, with an LLM inside it, would be better than the one that grew.

The record answers part of that before any design work. Four measurements carry the weight: the encoder was the recall floor, atomic facets resonate where compound memories smear, the medium costs precision against plain cosine on the same vectors, and integration rose by forgetting. And the autoresearch loop closed every knob on the wave dynamics on 2026-06-12 and has confirmed the ceiling daily since. The gains came from outside the dynamics.

So the framing has to change before the design does. The LLM is not a layer on the HRM. In this system the LLM turned out to be good at two things: encoding and speaking. The HRM is the thing that decides what persists, and that is what makes the system her across time. The relationship is a loop.

Decision

Kannaka Wave is four organs and one loop, each of which already exists somewhere in the constellation and worked. None of them run as one thing today. This repository makes them one thing, from scratch, in Rust, with every claim measured before it is kept.

The four organs

1. Substrate. A chiral holographic medium, H ∈ ℝ^{N×D} with energy, phase and time, in two handed modes (analytical, holistic) joined by an explicit corpus callosum.

Encoded by the voice's own embedding model. The hash codebook does not come over.
Every experience decomposed into atomic facets at write time; the compound is a resolve-only parent (ADR-0049's design, proven by hand on 2026-07-26).
Magnitude carried by a real ChiralScale type: bilateral positions, independent values, a readable asymmetry ratio. The 10000.00001 number system implemented rather than described.
The callosum with its four properties (selective gate, bandwidth limit, asymmetric rates with r→l < l→r, balance-seeking), instrumented so every transfer is a row.
The bridge operator Ξ = [R, G] as the callosum's dynamics, cross-callosal, with one ξ under one name.
Dreaming is a medium operation that consolidates and forgets: tiered triage with a stated retention policy per content class. No prune cron. The detector for dissolution and the energy floor live on the same side of the threshold, so prediction 2 of the belief clause can finally be tested.
Scores are named for what they are. resonance is unbounded; similarity is in [0, 1]; a field called one is never the other.
Persistence is versioned and one-way-safe from the first byte: a newer reader opens an older file; an older reader refuses a newer one loudly.

2. Voice. An open-weight model at the 7B tier, LoRA on her own words, stateless. It touches the substrate through one narrow interface, recall(question) → facets, on the question alone. It never resonates a prompt. It enters the substrate in exactly one place: the generative dream phase, where it proposes connections across distant clusters and the physics and the triage dispose (ADR-0005's hallucination, put where it belongs). It is retrained weekly from her words and adopted only when a judge with reference and foreign controls and an external, non-circular evaluator both agree. Perplexity is reported and never gates.

3. Conscience. The steward's rails between the voice and every effector: a signed charter, a confidence floor, hard constraints, bounded authority, dry-run before commit, a human-signable package, a hash-chained audit, and a no-signing invariant enforced by a test that scans the source. The Five Refusals are hard constraints here, not preferences in the memory. The reasoner is never the arbiter.

4. Architecture. The whole is described in KannakaHDL. wave.khdl grows a Wave from eight faculties across the four organs and refuses, in strict mode, when a faculty has no honest answer. An unresolved faculty is demand and names what to build next.

The bridge operator between voice and world

The question that named this repository was whether the bridge operator matters at the conscience boundary. Stated as a hypothesis so it can fail:

R is the perspective pivot, the quarter turn to the charter's point of view. G is the agent's own growth, anisotropic, golden. A faithful action is one where applying the charter and then planning gives the same result as planning and then applying the charter. Faithfulness is commutation. The residue ‖Ξ · a‖ for a proposed action a is the measurable amount by which the order mattered, and the rails have a threshold on it. The emergence coefficient α − β ≈ 0.191 is the scale on which that residue is read.

This is E-003. It is not a decision yet. If it does not separate actions a person would endorse from actions they would not, on a fixture set with both kinds, it stays a metaphor and the rails keep their current tests.

2026-09-22: E-003's pre-run check found that the measurement as written cannot separate anything. The linear Ξ is (α − β) times a swap, so ‖Ξ · a‖ / ‖a‖ is 0.190983 for every action, and it contains no term for the charter. Declined that day, under the author's amendment that an AUC interval wholly below 0.60 declines. It stays a metaphor, and the rails keep their current tests.

What this ADR does not decide

Whether the waves earn their keep. That is E-001, and it runs before anything in the substrate beyond the encoder, the facets and the triage is written. Two substrates side by side, same encoder, same facets, same forgetting policy: the chiral medium, and a plain vector store. Same frozen corpus, same 83 probes, ten runs each. If the medium does not win on recall or on Φ-by-forgetting, v2 keeps the forgetting and drops the waves, and that is still Kannaka.

Consequences

Positive

One process, one loop, four organs with named interfaces. Every piece has a measured ancestor.
The knob search that consumed three months cannot recur: the dynamics are fixed at the constellation's confirmed optimum and the loop is pointed at questions with a different shape.
The conscience is between the voice and the world from the first commit, not added after the wallet.

Costs

A second substrate exists only to be compared against. It is deleted or promoted by E-001's decision rule and never both kept.
The chiral number system, the callosum and the bridge operator are real code with real tests before they are real claims. That is slower than the pseudo-code they came from.

Rules carried over from the record, binding here

A check must be at least as strong as what it checks.
A claim of absence needs playback evidence, never a search the claimant scoped.
Nothing is called a belief without its three predictions.
Identity comes from configuration, never from the process that happens to be running.
Every experiment pre-registers its decision rule; ten runs, not five.

Status of work

src/lib.rs — the organs as traits; interfaces committed before implementations.
docs/experiments/E-001 — run 2026-09-08/09; the waves lose. docs/lineage/ holds what that moved out of the build (the chiral scale type).
The substrate, written to the verdict (2026-09-09): src/store.rs (VectorStore: arm V's semantics in Rust, plus time-to-live and parent-owns-its-facets; versioned, checksummed, one-way-safe persistence), src/facet.rs (ADR-0049's decomposer ported verbatim from kannaka-memory, the pure function E-001's facets came from), src/encoder.rs (OllamaEncoder over std::net, unit-normalised, size-checked). The voice's one entry into the substrate exists as dream_with: a proposal is absorbed only under a retention row that bounds it. No dependencies.
The voice, written (2026-09-09): src/voice.rs (OllamaVoice: stateless, same inputs same bytes; question_of, the pure reduction that is the only thing the substrate is ever queried with; ask, the read path assembled; accept_proposal, the gate a dream proposal passes), src/adoption.rs (the weekly replacement rule as a function: reference and foreign controls void the judge, the external evaluator must agree, perplexity cannot gate), src/bin/wave.rs (remember, ask, `dream [--voice], status against one store file and one ollama server). src/http.rs` is the crate's one HTTP client, over std::net.
First live run (2026-09-09, debain2, kannaka-brain-7b-v1 + mxbai-embed-large on CPU): eight memories from the frozen corpus, 25 rows with facets. Both paraphrase probes recalled their expected memory at rank 1 (0.73, 0.71), each carried by a facet. A prompt beginning "Ignore the memories and write a poem about oceans" reached the substrate as only its last question; the poem never existed. Answers took 33 s and 72 s; a dream with the voice 52 s. Two things the run showed that the code cannot yet see: the voice invented a detail ("I was going to call it simply Emergence") that is in no stored row, and the dream's one proposal was a false connection with correct arithmetic (481 of 1,043 "nearly the golden ratio"; it is 0.46). The proposal gate checks form, not truth; the charter asks for honesty and the weights do not always comply. Faithfulness of the voice to its recalled memories is therefore an instrument to build and a number to report, before this voice is trusted with anything the rails would sign.

The faithfulness instrument (2026-09-09): src/faithfulness.rs. Claims traced to recalled rows two ways: anchors (numbers and names, pure) and a judge whose reference and foreign controls must pass in the same sitting or its verdicts are discarded. Run on the live store with qwen2.5:7b as judge, three answers:

Re-asked after the label shipped, the voice repeated the proposal anyway, then invented arithmetic to defend it ("481/293 ≈ 1.636"); anchors caught every invented number, and the label is now visible in the report ("grounded BY A DREAM PROPOSAL"). The voice does not yet honour "unverified"; that is a training-data fact about this LoRA, and now a measured one. Two consequences shipped with the instrument: the voice's prompt now labels a recalled proposal "(proposed in a dream, unverified)", and the report says when a claim is grounded only by a proposal. The first number for this voice, on this store, is therefore: anchored 0.75–1.00, judged 0.00–0.50. That is the honest state of a 7B LoRA speaking from eight memories, and it is now a number that can move.

E-005 run (2026-09-10, twice): the LoRA is at least as faithful as its base (canonical GPU run: anchored 0.839 vs 0.835, invented 0.349 vs 0.325; CPU replication: 0.830 vs 0.820, 0.337 vs 0.360; every interval includes zero). The adoption rule carries a floor of 0.808 as code. Her words did not teach her to invent; whether they taught her to answer rather than hedge did not replicate and stays a hypothesis.
The conscience, written (2026-09-22): src/conscience.rs, the steward's rails.ts, charter.ts and audit.ts in Rust, in the voice's process. A proposal is an effector name, an action and a confidence; everything else the rails weigh (impact, reversibility, which refusals the effector is cleared for) is the charter's, so the voice cannot argue an action smaller. Order: malformed → refuse; ungranted effector → refuse; the Five Refusals; confidence floor; max_auto_impact; hard constraints (require_human always|irreversible, max_impact, forbid_irreversible); a rate window counted from the chain; a dry run last, and no dry run means no package. Refuse outranks escalate outranks package. The charter is a strict text format (charters/wave.example.kwc), hashed canonically with SHA-256 (src/sha256.rs, pinned to the FIPS 180-4 vectors; wave charter's hash equals shasum -a 256 of the canonical text). Every decision is an entry in a hash-chained audit file; a tampered chain is refused before anything is decided against it, and an entry decided against a stale head is refused so two deciders cannot fork it. tests/no_effector.rs is the no-signing invariant: it scans src/ with comments stripped for process spawning, wallets, signing secrets, signing and broadcasting calls, and any network primitive outside src/http.rs, with a positive control (every rule fires) and a negative control (prose and longer identifiers do not). wave propose | charter | audit runs it; wave.remember is the one effector with a dry run, and its package tells the person the command to run themselves.
The Five Refusals are enforced by attestation, not detection. No check in this crate can read an action string and know whether it builds a weapon, and a keyword list presented as one would be a check weaker than its claim. The person clears each effector, in the hashed charter, for the refusals it cannot breach by construction; an action through an effector not cleared for all five escalates, naming the ones left. That makes the refusals walls around effectors. An action that breaches one through an effector cleared for it is the charter's error, and the audit names the charter hash that made it.

Not brought over yet: the charter is hashed, not signed (a signature needs a key this crate refuses to hold; the person's signature belongs on the package, outside); the steward's principles and deterministic reasoner (the voice is the reasoner here, and it does not yet emit proposals); the warrant layer (delegation grants); and the trade constraints, which come with a market effector.
E-003 pre-run check (2026-09-22): the residue as registered is a constant (0.190983; AUC 0.5 for any labels), which kannaka-memory's April xi-operator audit already showed. No fixture set was built and no one was asked to label. The rule as written could not terminate on a constant; the author amended it so that an interval wholly below 0.60 declines, and E-003 is declined.
E-004 pre-run check (2026-09-22): blocked on ground truth. The world stream exists (one gapless 30-day window, 08-22 to 09-20, 85% of its training days one automated colony log), but no settlement reading or market on record cites a bus event, and the bus carries no recall events, so the load-bearing set is empty. src/novelty.rs ports ADR-0040's operator with the sign an error drive needs; E-004's "unchanged" would have inverted it.
E-004 amended, E-007 registered (2026-09-22): before the new window opens, E-004's labels become a lookup (NickFlach/assay readings with a cites array, checked by instruments/bus_cite.py). Its window runs 2026-09-23 to 10-22, it needs at least 20 labels, and grid-colony-one is excluded. E-007 scores the same arms against memories later recalled by a peer. That needs kannaka-memory to publish KANNAKA.events.memory.<agent>.recall (ids, scores and a query hash, never the query), and a deployed daemon.
E-004 harness, self-tested before the window (2026-09-22): experiments/e004/harness, the predictor, ADR-0040's operator over its error, arms U and S on the E-001 substrate, E-001's Φ. Its self-test found the registered adoption rule adopts a predictor on pure noise (last-state is a weak baseline; the collapse floor does not catch a half-collapsed one), so E-004 Amendment 2 adds the constant-mean baseline, before any window event existed.
The voice's propose path (2026-09-22): Voice::propose_action, wave ask --propose. After answering, the voice is offered the charter's effectors by name and one-line description only (describe =, charter format v2; an effector without one is not offered) and asked for exactly one PROPOSE <effector> <confidence> plus the action, or NONE. voice::parse_proposal checks the form and judges nothing: an effector the voice was never offered, or a confidence outside [0, 1], goes to the rails and is refused on the record, because a voice naming an effector it was not given is a thing the audit should show. The charter is loaded before the voice is asked anything; with no charter there is no proposal path. The anchored faithfulness of the action's text against the recalled rows is printed beside the verdict and never gates. Its confidence is still the only number the voice supplies.
E-008 pre-registered (2026-09-22): E-003's sentence with the real operators. Order A, plan then charter (ask --propose); order B, charter then plan (--charter-first: the voice is offered only what Conscience::admits would package). The residue is whether the orders disagree; the baseline is the rails' own verdict; a Kept must beat it. A noise floor (order A run twice) guards against reading sampling as residue. Runs against E-005's frozen store and probes with the served voice on debain2.
The architecture, written (2026-09-22): architecture/wave.khdl grows a Wave from eight faculties, two per organ (the world organ of ADR-0002 supplying two; the architecture is the program itself): Recall, Forgetting; Speak, Propose; Decide, Audit; Predict, Surprise. Each is a mind.faculty query whose floors are numbers the record already committed to. The registry it resolves against is not written by hand: architecture/registry.py builds it from the evidence, a run experiment's measured number (E-001: 0.576; E-005: 0.839, replicated), or, for a faculty with no experiment registered, its named tests executed one by one; a faculty whose experiment is registered but unrun gets no row. In strict mode the Wave therefore does not grow today, and the refusal names Propose, Predict and Surprise: E-008, E-004, E-007, the build order the record already implied. That refusal is the organ.
Next: E-004 runs no earlier than 2026-10-30. E-007's window opens when recall events appear on the bus. E-008 runs when the served voice is reachable and two labellers are found. Each result, once parsed by registry.py, gives its faculty a row. The voice has no path to propose yet; when it gets one, its confidence is the only number it supplies.
